Development Club of the Year: How Miramichi United Built Something Real in a Small City
In 2022, Miramichi United Soccer Club walked away from the Soccer NB awards ceremony with the Development Club of the Year award. For a volunteer-run organization in a city of roughly 18,000 people, competing against clubs from Moncton and Fredericton with larger populations and deeper resources, it was a significant moment. It was also a long time in the making.
More than three decades ago, when Miramichi United was founded, the goal was simple: give kids in the region somewhere to play soccer. Today the club runs recreational programs for children ages 4 to 12 in Miramichi, Blackville, and Rogersville. It fields competitive teams at multiple youth levels in the NB Soccer League. It runs fall and winter programs from September through April. And it has recently added a dedicated pre-season girls’ technical skills workshop — a free training session open to all registered U13-to-U18 girls in the club’s competitive program, hosted by a coach who is not only the U15 Girls Coach at Miramichi United, but a former Team NB player and current varsity player at Crandall University.
That last detail — a university-level player coming back to coach younger girls in her community — is a small thing that says a lot.
Building a Club in a Small City
Running a soccer club in a city like Miramichi is a fundamentally different challenge than running one in Moncton or Fredericton. There is no depth of bench to draw from — not for players, not for coaches, not for administrators. When volunteers burn out or move away, there often isn’t an easy replacement. When a competitive team struggles to fill a roster, there’s no second club in town to pull from.
And yet Miramichi United has grown. The club stretched its recreational program to serve not just the city itself but surrounding communities like Blackville and Rogersville — small towns 30 to 50 kilometres away that would otherwise have no organized soccer at all. That kind of geographic reach is logistically demanding and speaks to a board and a group of volunteers who genuinely see the club’s role as regional, not just municipal.
The Women’s Game in Miramichi
The introduction of a dedicated girls’ pre-season technical skills workshop is worth highlighting in its own right. Women’s soccer development has historically been underfunded and under-resourced in New Brunswick relative to the men’s game. A club making an explicit, coach-led investment in its female competitive players — and making that investment free and open to all registered girls — is a meaningful step.
The workshop model, led by a coach with firsthand experience at the provincial and university levels, is the kind of mentorship pipeline that high-performance sport literature says matters. Seeing someone who looks like you, who came from the same community, succeed at a higher level — it changes what players think is possible for themselves.
What the Award Actually Means
The Soccer NB Development Club of the Year award recognizes something specific: not the most wins, not the most registrations, but the most meaningful progress in developing a club’s organizational capacity, programming, and community impact. Winning it as a mid-sized city club — in a province where the bigger centres dominate most resources — validates a decade-plus of quiet, unglamorous work.
That work continues. The club is actively developing summer skills camps. It’s modernizing its digital presence. It’s pushing competitive teams higher in the provincial structure. And it’s doing all of it in a community that loves its sport but doesn’t have the funding base of a Moncton or Fredericton.
There’s a particular kind of determination that comes from building something in a small city against the odds. Miramichi United Soccer Club has it. The 2022 award was recognition of that — but the best chapters of the club’s story may still be ahead.
