Soccer Edmundston: The Community Association Keeping the Beautiful Game Alive in NB’s Northwest
In the northwest corner of New Brunswick, soccer has deep roots — and the organization behind it is Soccer Edmundston Inc., a registered community association serving players of all ages across the Edmundston region.
Despite what you might read elsewhere, there is no club called “Edmundston FC.” The real organization is Soccer Edmundston, based at 12 Rivière-à-la-Truite Street, Edmundston, NB — and they’ve been quietly doing the work of building a soccer community in one of the most linguistically distinct cities in Canada.
Who They Are
Soccer Edmundston Inc. is a minor league soccer association focused on the development of young athletes in the region. They offer both recreational and competitive programs for all ages, from beginners through competitive youth. Their motto says it plainly: pour la compétition ou le plaisir — for competition or enjoyment.
The association is registered with Soccer NB and competes in the provincial structure, including the NSL (North Soccer League) with age divisions from U11 through U18 for both boys and girls, as well as the NBSL (NB Soccer League) alongside provincial clubs like Chaleur, Codiac, Dieppe, FDSA, Fundy, and Saint John.
A Genuinely Bilingual Soccer Community
Edmundston sits on the New Brunswick–Quebec border and is one of the most francophone cities in the province. Soccer Edmundston reflects that — their website and programming operate primarily in French, while welcoming anglophone players and families. It’s an organic bilingualism that mirrors the city itself.
Soccer in Edmundston has also grown through the city’s newcomer community. In 2023, Saint Mary’s Academy — a local K-12 school — formed its first soccer team in 15 years, with players from 12 different countries including Benin, Cameroon, Haiti, Japan, Madagascar, Romania, and Sudan. Many had never played organized soccer before. The local soccer community helped equip them with jerseys, shorts, and game socks. That story says a lot about what soccer means in this corner of New Brunswick.
Small Market, Real Challenges
Like all northwest NB clubs, Soccer Edmundston operates with a smaller player pool than urban centres, longer travel distances for provincial competition, and fewer sponsorship opportunities. Their community-first approach — prioritizing development and access over elite pathways — is what keeps the program sustainable and growing.
You can find them at socceredmundston.com or on Facebook and Instagram at @socceredmundston. Registration for their programs is open online.
