Competitive Youth Soccer

If your child has shown real promise in recreational soccer and you’ve started hearing words like “Premiership,” “Academy,” and “tryouts” — this guide is for you. Competitive youth soccer in New Brunswick has a clear pathway, but it can feel confusing from the outside.

The Two Streams: Recreational vs. Competitive

Most kids start in recreational soccer through their local club — Codiac in Moncton, clubs in Saint John, Fredericton, Bathurst, and elsewhere. This is house league soccer: low-pressure, skill-building, fun. The competitive stream — the NB Youth Soccer Premiership — is a separate program for players who want to be challenged at a higher level.

What Is the Premiership?

The NB Youth Soccer Premiership is the provincial competitive league for players from U13 to U18. Teams are formed through tryouts run by registered clubs, and they compete provincially — meaning travel to other cities is part of the commitment. The Premiership feeds into Atlantic-level and national competitions for the top performers.

What Parents Should Know Before Tryouts

Time and cost commitments are significantly higher than recreational soccer. Expect two or three training sessions per week, plus weekend games and occasional travel. Costs vary by club but typically range from $800 to $1,500 per season including registration, equipment, and travel. Speak to other Premiership families at your club — they’re the best source of real expectations.
